All of you who know Davis, know about his Wubba Nub, or as he calls it, his "bubba." He got his Wubba Nub when he was just a few weeks old! I bought it online after hearing about it from my friend, Anna. It's so cute! It's a soothie pacifier connected to a stuffed animal frog. The idea is that the frog will help keep the pacifier in an infants mouth, and it really seemed to do the job for us! Davis became really attached to "bubba", and although he usually was only allowed to have it at naptime or night time after a certain age, he loved his bubba so much! It was his friend, his toy, and of course, a conversation piece! ha! He liked to hit Sam, our dog, with it, and throw it out of his crib, stroller, etc. Bubba was like a member of the family. . . . literally!!! Granted, I worried about the fact that Davis had such a babyish pacifier, and hoped that we could somehow convince him to take a regular pacifier! But, I wasn't ready to say good-bye just yet. Michael and I are in no way anti-pacifier parents. So why am I telling you all of this. . . . .Here's the story.
On the Thursday before Christmas, I sent Davis to Mother's Day Out. I tucked bubba into his back pack in case he needed while at school. I always sent it, but according to his teachers, he rarely needed it. This particular day, I picked him up from school, and headed home for his nap time. When I looked in his backpack for bubba, he wasn't there. My heart dropped! I hurried back up to the school, and with one of his teachers, turned the classroom upside down. She went through the trash, I went through every bin, looked in toys, baskets, cabinets, behind shelves, in the changing table. . . . there wasn't a stone unturned! I even scoured the grounds of the school where they had strolled. The last time his teachers remembered him having it was on the stroll! All I could think about was Davis strolling through the little alley beside the school and chunking bubba overboard, and no one noticing that his beloved friend was gone! Poor baby! Or, so I thought! Michael went back up to the school in the rain and looked, all the parents of his classmates were called etc. No bubba! He slept fine the first night, but Michael and I couldn't help but feel guilty that Bubba was gone forever. We tried to give him new ones, and he refused to take them! After a day or two, we felt better about it and kind of felt relieved that breaking him from the bubba had happened so easily for us! Then, on Sunday afternoon, there was a knock at the door. There bubba was in a ziploc bag. Someone had turned it in to the church nursery after finding it the street. Yuck! It smelled like mildew, and Michael scrubbed and scrubbed it. When we offered it to Davis, he swatted at it, and said, "NO!" That has been his reaction ever since! He's such a big boy! He's over the bubba! Sad but true. At least we have bubba to keep and show him when he's older, and we can all laugh about the story of "Bubba."
